How to Improve Volleying and Shooting - Lesson 3 - Back to School

In football scoring goals is the ultimate objective, and two essential skills that can make all the difference are volleying and shooting. Whether you're trying to find the back of the net from outside the box or connecting with a cross, mastering these skills is crucial. In this blog post, we will delve into the fundamentals of volleying and shooting and provide you with valuable tips to elevate your game.

Volleying:

  1. Body Positioning: Proper body positioning is key to successful volleys. Keep your eye on the ball and position yourself so that your non-kicking foot is planted beside the ball and your body is over the ball.

  2. Timing: Timing is critical when volleying. Anticipate the ball's trajectory and make your move as it approaches. Striking the ball at the right moment ensures accuracy and power.

  3. Technique: Use the inside of your foot to make contact with the ball. Keep your knee slightly bent and your ankle locked. Strike through the center of the ball to maintain control and direction.

  4. Follow Through: After striking the ball, follow through with your kicking foot. This will help you maintain balance and control. A proper follow-through also contributes to accuracy.

  5. Practice: Volleying is a skill that requires repetition. Practice receiving and striking balls out of the air during training sessions. Focus on both low volleys and high volleys to develop versatility. Utilis the Urban Skills trainers return ramp in practicing your volleys.

Shooting:

  1. Balance and Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your body weight over your shooting leg. Your non-shooting foot should be pointed toward your target. This stance provides balance and allows you to generate power.

  2. Placement vs. Power: Consider your distance from the goal and the goalkeeper's position. For close-range shots, focus on accuracy and placement. For long-range efforts, prioritize power. Try using a target sheet to  improve your placements on shots.

  3. Strike with Instep: For accuracy and power, use the instep (the inside part of your foot) to strike the ball. Your toes should be pointed down, and your ankle should be locked.

  4. Head Over the Ball: Keep your head down and over the ball during your shot. This helps in keeping the ball low and on target. Lift your head only after you've made contact with the ball.

  5. Follow Through: A good follow-through is crucial for accuracy and power. Your kicking leg should continue its motion toward the target after striking the ball. Your toes should point toward your target.

  6. Variety of Shots: Develop a range of shots, including the inside of the foot, outside of the foot, and laces. Being able to adapt your shot to the situation will make you a more unpredictable and effective striker.

  7. Practice Under Pressure: Simulate game situations during practice. Have a defender apply pressure, or practice shooting under time constraints. This will help you perform well in real-game scenarios.

  8. Mental Focus: Stay mentally focused when shooting. Visualize your target, and trust your technique. Confidence and composure are essential when finishing in front of the goal.

  9. Decision-Making: Assess the situation quickly. Should you shoot or pass? Knowing when to take a shot and when to pass to a teammate can be the difference between success and failure.

  10. Feedback and Analysis: Seek feedback from coaches and teammates on your shooting technique. Analyze your own shots through video footage to identify areas for improvement.

Mastering volleying and shooting in football requires dedication and continuous practice. These skills can turn opportunities into goals and make you a valuable asset to your team. Work on your technique, timing, and decision-making to become a more lethal finisher on the pitch. Remember that even the best players are continually refining their shooting skills to stay at the top of their game.
